Areas of Specialization
Evidence-Based Treatment
Therapy backed by science and tailored to support your journey to recovery!
-
Our Diagnostic Assessment is a detailed 1–2 hour evaluation designed to identify your main concerns and any co-occurring conditions. This comprehensive process includes completing several diagnostic rating scales and a diagnostic interview with the clinician during the appointment. By gaining a thorough understanding of your unique experiences, strengths, and challenges, we create a personalized and effective treatment plan tailored to your individual needs and goals.
-
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment for OCD. In ERP, individuals systematically face the thoughts, images, objects, and situations that trigger their anxiety or obsessions, while refraining from performing compulsive behaviors that usually provide temporary relief. Through this gradual process, individuals learn that their fears are unfounded, reducing the power of obsessions and significantly decreasing distress over time.
ERP is an evidence-based treatment effective for managing OCD, Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), and Illness Anxiety Disorder.
-
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based approach that focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By identifying and challenging unhelpful thought patterns, CBT helps individuals develop healthier perspectives and coping strategies. This treatment is highly effective for a range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and OCD, empowering individuals to make meaningful changes and improve their overall well-being.
CBT is an effective treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Hoarding Disorder, Depression, and various comorbid conditions.
-
Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT) is a specialized approach designed to address Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) by focusing on the thought processes that lead to doubt and obsessional fears. Unlike traditional CBT, ICBT emphasizes identifying and challenging faulty inferences and reasoning patterns that drive obsessions, helping individuals develop greater clarity and confidence in their perceptions.
While our team is fully trained in ICBT, we do not currently offer this service.
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a behavioral therapy grounded in Relational Frame Theory, which explores how human language shapes experience and behavior. ACT focuses on transforming the way individuals relate to their thoughts, feelings, memories, and physical sensations—particularly those that are feared or avoided. By using acceptance and mindfulness techniques, ACT helps individuals reduce avoidance and attachment to distressing cognitions, fostering a greater ability to engage with the present moment. Patients are guided to clarify their values and goals, committing to meaningful behavioral changes.
This therapeutic approach has been successfully applied to various conditions, including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
-
Interoceptive Exposure is a cognitive-behavioral therapy technique designed to reduce panic attacks and anxiety sensitivity by deliberately inducing feared bodily sensations in a controlled environment. This method helps individuals confront and diminish their fear of internal cues associated with panic, such as increased heart rate or dizziness. By repeatedly experiencing these sensations without the anticipated catastrophic outcomes, clients learn to reinterpret them as non-threatening, leading to decreased anxiety responses.
-
The Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) Model is an evidence-based treatment for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), such as trichotillomania and excoriation disorder. It identifies and addresses five key factors—sensory, cognitive, emotional, motor, and environmental—that contribute to the behavior. Therapists use this understanding to create personalized strategies, including habit reversal and environmental adjustments, to help clients manage and reduce BFRBs.
-
Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals manage tic disorders, including Tourette Syndrome. CBIT involves increasing awareness of tics and their preceding urges, and teaching specific behavioral responses that are incompatible with the tics, thereby reducing their frequency and severity. This structured approach typically includes habit reversal training and may incorporate relaxation techniques and environmental modifications to address factors that exacerbate tics.
-
Exposure therapy is an evidence-based treatment for anxiety disorders, including social anxiety and specific phobias.
For social anxiety disorder, exposure therapy involves gradually and systematically facing feared social situations, such as public speaking or attending gatherings. This process helps individuals build confidence and reduce avoidance behaviors, ultimately decreasing anxiety in social interactions.
For specific phobias, such as fear of heights or spiders, exposure therapy entails controlled and repeated exposure to the feared object or situation. This method aims to desensitize individuals to the phobic stimulus, diminishing fear responses and avoidance patterns over time.
We advocate for social justice, practice therapy from an LGBTQ+ affirmative stance, and engage in anti-racist training and self-study. Our SOAR clinicians are comfortable with treating OCD themes surrounding sexuality, gender, and race.
